Environmental activists tossed pea soup on a Vincent van Gogh painting Friday in Rome to protest carbon use and natural gas extraction, but caused no damage to the glass-covered painting.
Security intervened immediately and removed the protesters kneeling in front of “The Sower” at the Palazzo Bonaparte to deliver a manifesto. Protesters from the same group, the Last Generation, earlier blocked a highway near Rome.
The painting belongs to the Kroller-Muller Museum in the Netherlands and was on loan for a show in Italy’s capital featuring works by Van Gogh. Officials said the 1888 painting was undamaged.
Italy’s new culture minister, Gennaro Sangiuliano, condemned the protest.
“Attacking art is an ignoble act that must be firmly condemned,’’ he said. “Culture, which is the basis of our identity, must be defended and protected, and certainly not used as a megaphone for other forms of protest.”
Climate activists have staged similar protests have taken place at museums in Britain, Germany and elsewhere in Italy, targeting works by Van Gogh, Botticelli and Picasso.
The stunt backfired for some onlookers.
“It totally defeats the purpose.” Hans Bergetoft, a tourist from Stockholm, said. “I am really for the cause in itself, but not the action. Not the action that they took. Not at all.”

People get the symbolism: The protesters are attempting to damage a priceless human legacy like the polluters and oil profiteers are destroying the legacy of the nature of Planet earth for further generations.
But the symbolism is getting lost in the poor choice of targets. Target Wall Street and the oil companies.
Or the World Cup in Qatar for that matter.
I agree dagon. This was a pointless and useless gesture.
Gloabl warming is a very real danger and we are already seeing dire consequences, but this act was just dumb.
Soon they’re going to hit the big LNG plant in the Netherlands.
The one that is crucial for European Gas supplies.
Environmental Terrorists.
I spend my life and my energy often my family’s money (money I could use to give my children and wife a few more luxuries like a nice dinner out) to preserve and save creations and art works of our past so future generations can enjoy them.
Along comes fools like these that wilfully try and destroy these things because they think they have more rights, they are right their views must be followed and they can tell others what to do.
If they are so sure and so dedicated, then let’s see them first dispose of their smartphone, Alexa, all the apps they use, their gadget equipped homes, their brand clothing and more often fast fashion mass produced throwaway rarely used more than a few times.
I find it strange that those most often calling other out calling people names are the ones acting like the groups of our past they claim others are.
Destroying art, banning and burning books, censorship of things made or written long before the modern area.
Do these acts remind you of certain governments in Europe in the 1920s, 30s, 40s and Asia in the 50s and 60s?
If not look up history
The Van Gogh is owned by the Kroller-Muller Museum in the Netherlands boasts the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world: almost 90 paintings and over 180 drawings.
The museum, founded by art collector Helene Kröller-Müller within the extensive grounds of her and her husband’s former estate, opened in 1938.
maybe if the media stops covering this every time it happens, these idiots will stop?
…And what does this accomplish?
Those clowns need to Gogh to jail.
Arrest them, charge them and sentence with minimum attention. Don’t even bother reporting it.
So attempt to vandalize and ruin priceless historical and cultural works of art because… Van Gogh and his contemporaries were such carbon emitters and used oil based paints as a medium? If you’re going to throw soup on a painting, try to damage some Andy Warhol canned soup works (I don’t think the world would miss them much!).

I guess they don’t know Van Gogh starved most of the time and never sold a single painting. Only survived because of his brother.
Environmental Terrorists

Actually no!
A vandal in modern area damages things just for the heck of it, the same for the rest.
These people are doing to force people to do as they say, they threaten others they hold people and things as hostages in a moral sense.
That is a terrorist by definition.
Great young heroes for the future. Please send them money.

Modern ‘area’? What is ‘the rest’?

Sorry, mate. I have no idea what you are talking about.

You obviously feel strongly on this matter seeing as you brought it up in a thread not related to the World Cup.
What are you doing about it?
@Jimizo
These people are Terrorists. They have already prevented Emergency Services from reaching those in need, and have proverbial “Blood” on their hands… so I steadfastly stand by my claim, that these people are Environmental Terrorists. They should be treated as such, and locked away forever, in order to protect Society, as that is what “Jails” are really for.
For more “intelligent” members of Society, there are better ways of achieving environmental Goals without causing damage and disruption to others such as they have done. Indeed, they alone, have damaged the movement – consider now the Public backlash against them…
Lock them up, 10 to 20 years would be okay, as that’s the timeline that the various Governments have said they’d work upon to make matters better – so when these people come out, perhaps they can review the situation again.
Modern ‘area’? What is ‘the rest’?
The Vandals were a tribe which attacked Rome as the Roman Empire was falling. Instead of utilising the spoils of war, they just pointlessly wrecked everything they could. That is where the word Vandal comes from.
