Jools Holland finds it hard to put his finger on the secret of his successful career. “I’m very lazy really,” the presenter and pianist says. “I lose interest quickly. Even if I go to the doctor and they start talking about something that is actually important, I start wondering about the paint colours on the wall. The same happens if we’re at a meeting talking about Later… But once the show starts, I wake up.”
It’s good that he’s alive on the job because in terms of music television, Holland, 64, is the last man standing. Pop music and television are driven by youth and novelty, allergic to old age. Yet next weekend his series Later… with Jools Holland will celebrate 30 years on air
